Browser Compatibility Testing

  • The web application needs to function optimally across major browsers.
  • Ideally to test such a scenario one would install various operating systems onto different machines and install the corresponding browsers on those machine. When the browsers cannot be installed side-by-side on a particular operating system like for example IE, they need to be installed on different machines again.
  • However with the help of virtualization products like Virtual PC or VMware, One can avoid installing different operating systems on multiple machines. Instead it can all be installed as virtualization images, those images can then be loaded using the corresponding virtualization products. This way just one machine can be used to do all the multi browser testing.
  • Microsoft has even given pre-built images for IE6,IE7 and IE8beta on Windows XP and Vista.
  • Firefox cannot be installed side-by-side through the installer, however it can be done using PortableApps. This site gives the portable version of popular applications. They have Firefox 3 and Firefox 2
  • IE8 can display a site in compatibility mode versus the latest strict compliance mode. The Developer Tools as well can be run using the same mode. IE - Compatibility Mode
